Students Of the World (SOW) enables university students to produce and leverage documentary media in order to garner support for innovative non-profits working in developing countries.
SOW is currently operating at The University of Michigan, The University of Texas, Brown University, Columbia University, The University of North Carolina and Duke University.
The SOW year begins in the fall, when our teams recruit new members and with CGI, we identify our NGO partners. We begin working with our partners to identify their needs for media and communication. We outline a month-long production schedule for May or June. And together, we fundraise for the cost of the trip and production.
While on the ground, our students document their daily experiences and send media updates through our website, See Change. Upon their return, some of the students spend time in Austin, editing with our producers and partner post-production house, 501 Post. Each team edits a short film, which we leverage to raise funds for our NGO partners through our See Change campaign. The team returns to campus in the fall, produces multi-media events to educate and raise money. They also return to recruit the next year's team. And the year begins again...
For chapter members, SOW is an opportunity: it is the chance to acquire and exercise new skills, it is the chance to be open to and learn from new people and cultures, experiences challenges in development, and it is the chance to learn about innovative solutions and return home to share these stories. Chapter members take on responsibilities within the team that will demand time, effort, and thought. On a larger scale, chapter members are accountable not only to their teammates, but also to their NGO partner, host communities and to their campus community, as well.
