In May of 2006, 12 students from the Duke chapter of Students of the World traveled to Porto Alegre, Brazil. They documented the work done by Embarq, a nongovernmental organization committed to the development of environmentally sound solutions to the challenges of urban mobility. In Porto Alegre, the team explored the economic, environmental, social and deeply personal costs of the city’s existing transportation system. Their work centered on the need for a more coordinated bus system in order to improve air quality, reduce urban crime, help rejuvenate the once vibrant city center and improve the quality of life for the millions of people who rely on public transportation in the region. In addition to the work shown at the CGI summit, the SOW team will exhibit their photography, writing and video at “InSight: a Student Documentary Festival” at Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies in October 2006.
