Ethiopia

In June of 2006, a joint Students Of the World team from new chapters at Brown and Columbia Universities traveled to Ethiopia to work with the African Services Committee (ASC) — a nongovernmental organization offering the first free market-based voluntary counseling and testing for HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia. SOW team members documented the obstacles of combating AIDS and ASC’s effective programming. Before ASC opened their first branch in a market in Addis Ababa, only about 1,000 people per year — in a country of 75 million — were being tested for HIV/AIDS. Within three years, African Services Committee’s three branches have tested over 30,000 people, and that number will continue to grow when the ASC opens its fourth branch in Mekele. In addition to the work shown at the Clinton Global Initiative summit and an article published in the Westchester County Business Journal, the SOW team is also preparing a photography exhibit for the fall of 2006.
