Guatemala’s civil war that ended
in 1996 claimed over 200,000 lives – most of
them Mayans, Guatemala’s indigenous population
that constitutes over half their population. The civil
war created numerous human rights abuses against the
Mayans, most who were poor farmers from the western
highlands, which included burning of villages, extensive
massacres and “disappearances.” The conflict
still plagues the country, as Mayans today face discrimination,
fear and stigma. Mayalan is a community
organization composed entirely of indigenous Mayans
in the rural communities of the western highlands of
Guatemala. |
