Texas SOW worked with a nonprofit organization, Playing for Peace (PFP), whose Middle East program uses the game of basketball to foster tolerance between Jewish and Arab youth within Israel and the West Bank. Traveling throughout the region, SOW visited the various basketball programs where Arab and Jewish youth come together, shedding both fear and stereotypes as they learned to work together as a team. Through close interactions with the coaches and participants of PFP, SOW was able to both witness and document the program’s success in facilitating positive dialogue between these deeply divided communities. While in Israel, the students also had the opportunity to meet with several other organizations working toward peaceful coexistence, including Seeds of Peace, Rabbis for Human Rights and Re’ut Sadaka (Friendship). In addition to the work shown at the CGI summit, the SOW team is planning a multimedia exhibit in the spring of 2007.
