Brown SOW split their trip to Western Kenya between two distinct NGO partners. First, they traveled to the village of Salabwek, which the Sanam Vaziri Quraishi Foundation (SVQF) is developing through a CGI commitment to the organization Free The Children. In Salabwek, SVQF is, among other things, building schoolhouses, developing sanitation provisions, delivering medical supplies, creating sustainable income generating activities, and providing a source of clean water. The Brown team photographed the work being done and started filming for a longer prospective project to be completed by future SOW teams. For the second part of their trip, the Brown team documented the work of the microfinance website Kiva and two of its field partners, the People Microcredit Investment Bureau (PEMCI) and the Kisumu Medical Education Trust (K-MET). Kiva allows people anywhere in the world to lend small amounts of money to individual entrepreneurs through its website. SOW members traveled throughout Western Kenya interviewing loan recipients, visiting small businesses, and attending weekly meetings of entrepreneurs. By providing its partners with much needed capital, Kiva has allowed them to vastly expand their operations, providing hundreds of additional loans to budding entrepreneurs. SOW members also wrote journal updates on each recipient they visited for Kiva's website. In addition to working on two short promotional films for K-MET and PEMCI to use as promotional and fundraising materials, the SOW team plans to exhibit their work at Brown this fall in an effort to raise money for K-MET and PEMCI. |
