The number of Mexican immigrants to
the U.S. has soared, in part because families who have
done agriculture for generations no longer have a source
of income. Mexican men from rural areas are forced
to migrate to work to support their families. Because
of these migration trends, rural communities are becoming
increasingly dependent on women; the state of Guanajuato,
for example, has one of the highest rates of migration
to the U.S. and is becoming 80%-90% women. Centro de
Desarrollo Agropecuario (CEDESA, translated “Center
for the Development of Small Farmers”) provides
free food, housing and workshops for Guanajuato farmers
and farmers from neighboring states. Witness for Peace
(WFP) is a grassroots organization whose mission is
to support peace, justice and sustainable economies
in the Americas. |
