As Russia began their transition to
a market economy, she faced many difficulties, including
fewer resources for social services, compounded by
increases in violence and the use of alcohol. This
negatively affected children and child care in massive
ways, as families were unable to care for children.
At a rate of over 100,000 children per year, youth
are abandoned to the state of Russia, falling victim
to extreme abuse and neglect. Kitezh Children’s
Community is an innovative grass-roots community
created for foster families of orphan children.
